Introductory online chess lessons for persons with epilepsy and seizures
Chess is a fantastic sport and exercise that requires planning, strategy, and memory. All of these cognitive skills can be strengthened with practice through playing chess. The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group is opening up its 2022 Wellness Program starting with online chess lessons over the summer.
The Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group (NEREG) and Mid-Atlantic Epilepsy and Sleep Center (MAESC) are proud to have Kyle and Kaleb Lancman (founders of www.unidospodemosmas.com) teaching our patients chess for 4 consecutive weeks. Kyle Lancman has been ranked among the top 100 US players for his age since he was in elementary school and has a USCF rating of 2100+. Kaleb Lancman, started playing a few years after his twin Kyle, and is now USCF rated at 1800+. Both have competed nationally and internationally for years . They recently represented Team USA at the Maccabi Games in Israel in July 2022 and Kyle won the gold medal.
They are happy to be sharing their knowledge with their students in this Introductory class because there is nothing they love more than to talk and teach chess!
Class 1: the class will go over what each of the pieces are, how they move and how they capture.
Class 2: the class will review what was learned in class 1 and then go over "castling," the value of the pieces and show an example game as a demonstration of how the pieces move
Class 3: the class will go over opening principles (controlling the center of the board, developing pieces, moving pieces to good squares) and will start the discussion on simple checkmates
Class 4: the class will go over more examples of checkmates as well as simple tactics
