Seizure Recognition & First Aid Training
Teachers are people. They come with their own set of misunderstandings and fears about epilepsy and seizures, as do most people who have never been affected in some way by this disorder. The best way to fix misconceptions and create a safe environment for someone with epilepsy is to ask your school to offer training on epilepsy. This can be arranged by contacting your local Epilepsy Foundation affiliate. Where one is not available, you can ask members of your health care team for direction. If all else fails, why not give a first aid video as a gift to your school? These can be purchased through the national Epilepsy Foundation. And, you can include the need for yearly epilepsy training in your child’s Individualized Education Program if one is in place.
