How long has the diet been used to treat epilepsy?
The diet was first used in the 1920s. However, it did not become very popular until the 1990’s. At that time, a Hollywood producer who had a son with epilepsy created the “Charlie Foundation” which promoted the diet significantly. A movie in which Meryl Streep starred (“First, Do No Harm”) and research was also sponsored by this foundation. Though methods of initiating the diet have almost completely changed since when it started, the goal of ketosis has always stayed the same.
