Are there any other possible side effects?

Other possible side effects include kidney stones (usually secondary to dehydration) and acidosis.  Further, possible complications that are seen mainly in adults include menstrual irregularities, pancreatitis, bone fractures, and eye problems.

To help monitor for any of these side effects, patients and families are educated on them prior to initiation of the diet.  In addition, patients should be followed up with every one to three months to monitor growth and lab levels.  Vitamin and mineral supplementation is also almost always necessary.
