Who should not be considered for this diet?
As noted above, diet therapy for epilepsy must be taken as seriously as a medication. It is very strict and requires time, dedication, and strong discipline. Therefore, patients and/or families who are not able to comply with the diet would not be good candidates. The right proportion of fat vs. protein/ carbohydrate has to be maintained at all times with no exceptions. Due to the fact that ketosis is what is helping control patient’s seizures, failure to maintain this state may result in increased episodes. Younger candidates must have parents who are very dedicated and able to control the diet all the times.
