Brain Infection
• Infection of the brain (encephalitis) or infection of the covering of the brain, the meninges (meningitis) could result in epilepsy
• The risk of epilepsy increases if the patient had a seizure at the time of the infection
• The risk of developing epilepsy is higher with encephalitis than with meningitis
• Encephalitis is often associated with a more difficult to control epilepsy and there could be more than one point of origin and is therefore not possible to treat surgically.
• Infections could be caused by:
- Viruses (herpes, etc)
- Bacteria (meningococcus, pnemococcus, Lyme disease, etc)
- Fungus
- Parasites
