High resolution MRI
It is a more sophisticated type of MRI which allows more details of the brain to be seen as compared to what the regular MRI shows. MRI power is measured in Tesla units. Most MRIs today are 1.5 T (Tesla units), but many epilepsy centers can now test the patient with a more powerful 3T MRI. The doctor will ask for special sequences or “brain cuts” to be imaged when the test is run on patients with epilepsy. This is necessary in order to see the areas of suspected seizure origin in greater detail. This special MRI study is called “epilepsy protocol”.
