Why is important to know the type of epilepsy?
Progression:
• Each epilepsy type will have a particular evolution
• For example, benign rolandic epilepsy will be outgrown by adolescence; juvenile myoclonic epilepsy is relatively easy to control with medication, however, without medication it will relapse
Treatment:
• Some epilepsy types will respond to particular groups of medication and could get worse with others
• For example, absence epilepsy will get worse with medication like Dilantin and will respond well to Zarontin, Depakote, Lamictal and Keppra
