What causes epilepsy?

Idiopathic: we do not know what causes it

Symptomatic: we know what causes it.
Examples of causes of epilepsy include head injury, stroke, brain tumors, brain infections, brain malformations, metabolic problems like diabetes and genetic factors among others.
