Support Groups
Support groups aren't for everyone, but for those who feel they would benefit from being able to discuss their epilepsy, or epilepsy in general, with others who are experiencing the same life issues, they can be very beneficial. Some groups meet in person, while others meet at online. Epilepsy chat rooms run by respected members of the epilepsy community can be valuable. Members typically relate strategies that have...or have not...worked for them and share stories about family, friends, employment and education that had been complicated by having epilepsy and seizures. Many times caregivers are invited to attend, or groups are established specifically for them, or for teens, young children, men, women or parents. Often speakers are invited and members gain important knowledge about epilepsy as well as information about new and important breakthroughs and treatments on the horizon. Attending a support group regularly often helps to alleviate some of the stressors and challenges that living with epilepsy can create.
At NEREG, we offer a monthly on-line support group for patients diagnosed with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) who have completed treatment and wish to continue touching base from time to time. This group "meets" on-line every month from September to June each year.
We ran face-to-face and on-line epilepsy support groups for years but lately, lack of attendance led to the closing of these groups. If you are a NEREG patient and would like to be considered for a new on-line support group for epilepsy, please send an email to Lorna Myers, Ph.D. at lmyers@epilepsygroup.com. If we gather enough new potential members, we might be able to start this group up again.
