Feature Article: Treating epilepsy through diets

Feature Article: Treating epilepsy through diets: If you have not heard of this before, it may seem surprising, but there are actually several diets that can be used to treat seizures and, in some cases, they can be astoundingly effective.

Dietary treatments for epilepsy involve the use of specific diet plans that are utilized to help manage and reduce seizures in individuals with epilepsy. These are non-pharmacological approaches and might be considered when medications fail to adequately control seizures or when individuals experience significant side effects from medications. In certain metabolic conditions, such as GLUT 1 transporter deficiency epilepsy, dietary therapy is the first line treatment of choice.

Epilepsy Survey results: For this issue, we asked our readers if they were aware of how to "be safe with seizures during the summer months." We were surprised that only 13% of the individuals who responded felt they definitely knew how to be safe during the summer.  Take-home message: we need to provide more information about seizure safety for summer months and most likely for other special situations.

Despite the summer months being meant for rest and relaxation, our epilepsy and seizures community has been busy. Dr. Lorna Myers of the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group and her colleague, Dr. Julia Doss, published a book for clinicians working with their first patient/s diagnosed with psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES).  Also, several of our doctors spent their time giving lectures and educating the general public on epilepsy and psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES).

Epilepsy on the move: Stay tuned for upcoming epilepsy and seizure disorder events and news.

In September, we are starting up many of our yearly activities, including our quarterly virtual epilepsy book club and our virtual monthly epilepsy support group. Also, our doctors are continuing their educational outreach with online webinars.  However, if an Epilepsy Walk or Run or attending an Epilepsy Expo is more your thing, then read on about two upcoming events in October.  And later in December, the American Epilepsy Society meeting that will be held in Orlando, FL where many of the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group doctors and clinical staff will travel to present their research and to learn from others.
