A seizure detection device that may help prevent SUDEP and fatalities in epilepsy

In Part One of this article, Dr. Evan Fertig, Epileptologist and the Director of Research for the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group, speaks to us about certain risks in epilepsy.  He also tells us about current research on a seizure detection device his group is conducting.

In Part Two, Amos Shaham, the engineer who designed a seizure detection device, EpiLert, tells us about the device and explains the reason that the EpiLert has so very few false alarms; by using a highly unique mathematical algorithm, the device actually “learns” to distinguish epilepsy movements from normal daily movement.

New Program: Book Club for Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group Patients
New Program: Book Club for Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group Patients

As part of our Wellness Program, NEREG will be launching an on-line (or phone-in) epilepsy-theme Book Club this spring!  Our first book is The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. This book tells the true story of a little refugee Laotian girl who has severe epilepsy and of how her family struggles in obtaining treatment for her.  The story is made even more compelling because it describes a strong clash of cultures between two very different ways of seeing/treating epilepsy: the US health care and Laotian viewpoints.
