Feature Article: Seizures can be scary-how you can increase safety and security in epilepsy

Seizures can be scary, especially for the family of someone with epilepsy (parents, spouses, children) as well as for the person with epilepsy (PWE) who may not be conscious during his/her seizures but hears about them later.

The idea for this article came out of our most recent epilepsy support group meeting when a spouse expressed concern regarding safety and the moderator put together a document with a series of safety items. These were shared with the group members and then it just seemed like a great idea to share this information with our readers as well.  And that is how it came to be that our December feature article is on how to stay safe/safer when living with epilepsy.

Seizure Star: Mia Montgomery, is the author of "On the Floor Again." Her book is a wonderful memoir that describes the road she traveled with her diagnosis of PNES, the ups and downs and how she has learned to manage the disorder in a way that works for her.  It has helped many living with PNES to read her book, realize they are not alone, and to learn from her unique experience as both a therapist and a patient.

It is for this reason that she has been chosen as the Northeast Regional Epilepsy Group December newsletter Seizure Star.

VIRTUAL SUPPORT GROUPS

PSYCHOGENIC NON-EPILEPTIC SEIZURES (PNES) SUPPORT GROUP

Third Wednesday of the month from 1PM to 2PM

The group is for patients at our NEREG PNES program diagnosed with PNES who have completed treatment or who are advanced in their current treatment. Unfortunately, the group is not open to anyone who has not gone through our treatment program because the demand would be too great for our conference call. The group meets to touch base, to go over current problems that may have arisen for group members associated to PNES, for general support and comradery, and to continue to be part of the PNES community. To register or obtain more information: lmyers@epilepsygroup.com

If you are a NEREG patient, have epilepsy and would be interested in a similar group, please contact lmyers@epilepsygroup.com.
