Seizure Precautions

• Get regular rest, sleep, nutrition, exercise and avoid excessive stress

• Take seizure medications as directed

• Make and keep regular follow-up visits with your medical providers

• Make refills on time and avoid running out of a medication supply
  - Speak with your medical provider or social worker in advance of running out of medication if you can’t afford your medication.  There are medication assistance programs that may be able to help, or they may be less expensive options (generic formulations or alternative mediations)

• Avoid excessive alcohol or illicit substances

• Discuss with your medical provider driving regulations in your state

• For person with epilepsy with breakthrough seizures, avoid
  - Bathing at home alone without someone nearby.  If possible take a shower instead of a bath to reduce the risk of drowning
  - Swimming in places without a trained lifeguard
  - Climbing to unsupported heights
  - Operating power tools or other dangerous machinery
  - Soft pillows. Firm foam pillows are preferable in case of a nocturnal seizure to reduce the risk of suffocation

• If you haven’t had an electrocardiogram (EKG), ask your medical providers if you need one
  - Some dangerous heart rhythms during seizures can be prevented if detected beforehand
