Modified Atkins diet

Though the diet has different principles than the ketogenic diet, it has the same goal: ketosis.  It is much newer than the ketogenic diet and is often more commonly used in the adult population (as most adults have trouble complying with the rigidity of the ketogenic diet).

• It was first reported in 2003
• There are not many studies, but those that have been completed have shown similar results than the ketogenic diet
• There is no limit in calories or proteins and the ketogenic ratio is low (1:1)
• There is no initial fasting and no hospital stay
• Level of carbohydrates is limited to 10 grams/day in children and 15 grams/day in adults and increased after a month depending on seizure control
• Requires vitamin and mineral supplements
• Also initial and follow up lab work and growth measurements.
